Hover a word for its meaning. Glosses draw on Amir Harrak’s translations and the SEDRA 3 Syriac lexicon (Beth Mardutho), used for academic purposes.

(1–5) In the eyes of the Lord, the death of all the righteous is honourable, for they overcome the world, die in Christ, and are saved by him. They enter the glorious habitations and rest from torments. He wipes their tears and gives relief to all grieving ones. One of their ranks, a brave priest named Rōmānōs (6–10) completed his course in the fear of his Lord, the Son of God. He kept his chastity and endured his pains with the might of the Holy One. Lo! He is (now) taking delight at the banquet of Jesus Christ. He acquired profitable learning with eagerness and adorned himself with spiritual gifts (11–15): Meekness, love, hope and faith. The Righteous One sat in exaltation, and became a model for him. God whom you served faithfully wanted you and he transferred you from this world in the month of Iyyār (May), bringing you up to him. (As for) the year of your death, the intelligent one would know it when (God) says to you: (16–20) O Rōmānōs the Priest, as watchful angel, enter your heaven! O holy ones of His, offer for me with a pure heart, a special prayer full of faith, so that Jesus the Lord may forgive all my faults and may save me from the suffering of this place.
